Choosing your sofa’s color palette is one of the most challenging interior design choices you will make.

That's why in a recent study we’ve analysed hundreds of thousands of King Living sofa purchases from 2019 through to June 2025, across eight regions including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, China, Singapore, and Malaysia. This primary research report reveals the real-world sofa trends that have shaped homes, offering a unique glimpse into how color choices have evolved and will continue to define 2026's interiors, covering:

But more than trends and statistics, it's about inspiration. It's about helping you find the color that feels like home. A color you’ll love for years to come.

Some colors will invite calm, others bring energy, and all should instinctively speak to how you want to live and be in your space. As you explore the most-loved colors of last year, ask yourself: Does this color invite you in? Does it quiet your mind or lift your mood? Does it feel like you?

Dramatic shifts in fabric sofa trends

The global data reveals a notable shift in sofa color preferences and that change is most striking in fabric sofas. Living rooms are moving away from cool grays and blues toward nature-inspired tones like forest greens and deep browns.

The gray sofa trend is declining:

  • In 2019, 52% of fabric sofa purchases were gray.

  • In 2026, gray has dropped to just 10% of fabric sofa sales.

Neutral sofas remain in demand:

  • Close to half of sofa sales in 2026 are neutral color tones.

Green sofas are gaining popularity:

  • Green sofas have surged to 18% in 2026, up from just 1% in 2019.

An expert in his field, Sebastian Nash, Head of Textile Development at King Living, brings a deep understanding of how fabrics can transform a space.

“There’s a strong emotional pull to natural tones,” explains Sebastian. People want their homes to feel relaxed, grounded and gentle, but still layered with personality. Green tones offer a sense of serenity and connect us to the outdoors without ever feeling sterile.

The choice to bring nature’s palette indoors suggests a collective pivot toward colors that feel restorative, personal and quietly expressive.

Leather sofa trends remain consistent

While fabric sofas are evolving with new trends, leather color preferences have remained remarkably consistent, with timeless tones continuing to be favoured in 2026.

  • Brown leather dominates with 53% of leather sofa sales

  • Neutrals sofas account for 24% of leather sofa sales

  • Gray sofas only make up 11% of leather sofa sales

What is driving the color shifts in 2026?

Global style cues continue to shape sofa trends worldwide. At last year's Milan Design Week, considered the industry’s most influential showcase of furniture design, innovation, and emerging aesthetics, our designers reported a strong presence of deep greens, earthy browns, and textural neutrals. This shift reflects a broader design movement embracing biophilic influences and indoor-outdoor living, where nature-inspired hues, especially green tones often referred to as the ‘millennial green trend, continue to gain popularity. Reporting direct from the 2025 Milan Design Week, King Living Senior Designer Alinta Lim, shared:

“Browns and greens are resonating globally because they ground us,” Alinta explained. They create spaces you want to fully relax into. It's no longer about simply following the trend color of the year, it’s about curating a palette that feels human, expressive, and deeply personal.

For King Living, part of the reason for a surge in green sofa sales is due to the launch of our 1977 Sofa. Released in June 2023, the design is regularly photographed and displayed in green-toned fabrics, and 21% of green sofa sales have come from the 1977 Sofa. This product is also aimed towards a younger demographic, who may be more influenced by the millennial green trend.

It’s important to note there is some bias reflected in our study, as popular colors are also influenced by the sofas we choose to display in our showrooms. For example, Jasper in Whiteley Riverstone is displayed in King Living showrooms around the globe and this was our most popular color of 2025.

Rodney Misso, King Living Head of Brand Environment who looks after showroom visual merchandising globally, also saw similar patterns with the Richmond Spice fabric.

“The colors we showcase on display models in our showrooms can really influence perception,” shares Rodney. “Richmond Spice was shown on the Zaza Sofa in showrooms for two seasons, and it became one of the most purchased colors. That’s not a coincidence.”

The most loved sofa colors of last year tell a story of desire for calm, grounded and inspiring living spaces. From earthy greens to calm neutrals, the color you choose for your sofa should reflect how you want to feel in your space.

Here’s how to interpret the key color categories of the year, and where to begin if one resonates with you.

Soft beige, linen, stone, off-white and sand. These timeless shades bring lightness and clarity, making them ideal for layered, tonal spaces. Whether you’re styling with boucle cushions or sculptural timber accents, neutrals act as a calming anchor.

Spice, rust, cedar, biscuit and tan all fall into the brown category. Brown is the new quiet luxury: rich, warm, and comforting. These tones feel honest and lived-in, ideal for relaxed, layered homes that favour tactility and warmth over perfection.

Grays

Cool and warm grays continue to serve as adaptable foundations. Once the default, gray has now become a conscious choice, best used to enhance other tones or anchor bolder styling elements.

Blues & Navy

More niche in 2025, but still a classic choice. Navy and dusty blue tones lend elegance and restraint, often used in coastal, formal or minimalist interiors. While blue and navy remain a smaller portion of sofa sales, they are also still favoured across the Jasper and King Cloud collections.

Looking ahead: Trend forecast

From calming neutrals to statement greens, the most popular sofa colors of 2025 reflect more than aesthetic preference, they reflect how we want to live.

Looking ahead to the 2026 and 2027 sofa trend forecast, Sebastian expects the rise of green to continue.

We’re seeing customers lean into eucalyptus and sage, pairing it with contrasting textures like boucle or timber. I believe next year we’ll see even more uptake in rich greens, and a reimagining of soft blush and rusty spice, with deep, dark moody reds along with muted browns as accent tones. We expect the momentum of the green trend to continue well into the future.”
